Star anise (Illicium verum), known as chakra phool in Hindi and thakkolam in Malayalam, is a spice used to give flavour to meat dishes, biryani and masala chai. It is one of the ingredients in garam masala and is commonly used in Chinese soups. Consumption of star anise tea after meals can cure digestive problems and cramps. The thymol, terpineol and anethole present in star anise oil is used to treat cough and flu.
